Wooden Chess set – February 2009

I built this chess set from pine and oak.  The oak is the dark squares and the pine is the light squares and the base of the set.  I used 1×2 strips of oak and pine and glued them together alternately.  Once the strips are glued together, you are left with one large square “striped” board.  Cut that board into 1×2 strips the other way and you are left with eight strips of striped wood.  glue these together in a checkerboard pattern, and there is the top of the chessboard.  After much planing and sanding, it looks like one large square board with a checkerboard pattern.
